Roach Killer History
There are many ways to eliminate roaches. Historically, the most sought after method of killing roaches was to use fumigation. Fumigation became very popular in the 60s and 70s because it was the most sure way to get rid of roaches. Today, there are much less toxic methods that are equally effective.
Roach Bait Is Effective and Has Low Toxicity
Proprietary formulated roach bait is extremely effective at getting your roaches gone for up to one year. It has the benefit of bringing the roaches out of their hiding places. The baits proprietary formula is loved by cockroaches. Roaches eat the bait and take it back to the nest. The entire colony will be eliminated. This sure beats chasing them down with a shoe! Boric acid (the main bait ingredient) is so low in toxicity the E.P.A. labels it benign.
How Does It Work
Boric acid is the key. Boric acid will eat off the waxy protective layer of the roach. The roach then becomes dehydrated and dies. The acid gets rubbed off on the roach and they take it back to the nest. The hatchlings eat the boric acid upon hatching and die. It’s total elimination.
Other Options We Don’t Recommend
Boric Acid Dust
Most boric acid is sold in dust form. It is sold in large big box stores like Home Depot. It will work if you know where the roaches walk. You lightly sprinkle it on the floors. It is not as effective because it’s very difficult to know where all the roaches walk. In addition, do you really want boric acid all over your floors?
Roach Killer Spray
Cans of spray make you feel good when you get a few roaches. They are somewhat effective if you can find the nest; most people can not. The only way to get rid of roaches is to eliminate the nest.
Insecticides
Again roaches must walk on the insecticide. You have to know where to strategically place it. It isn’t very easy to get all the roach territory. If you get a strong insecticide and apply to the nest, it will be very effective. The hard part is finding all the nest or nests. Which wall is it in?
There are two other big disadvantages to insecticide. Its toxic to humans and roaches build up immunity to it. Natural selection kicks in to preserve the species.
